Over 88% of the population now has access to clean water, a stark contrast to 1994, when over 50% lacked basic sanitation.
This emerged at the National Water Indaba, held since Thursday this week,in Midrand.
Challenges pointed out by civil society groups, including WaterCan, is the of illegal disconnection campaigns targeting informal areas, water leaks, pressures of a growing population in an already water-scarce country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered address at the Indaba on Thursday.
The President emphasized access to clean water is not only a constitutional right but a pillar for human dignity, economic growth, and national security.
Ramaphosa said R23 billion was allocated for large-scale water infrastructure projects.
“The fight against corruption and illegal activities in the water sector is critical, and with united efforts, we can restore the dignity of all South Africans through equitable water access.
Together, we must continue to prioritize water governance, management, and infrastructure development to secure a sustainable future for all” said Ramaphosa.
