About 40 white rhino were donated by African Parks, to the Munyawana Conservancy in KwaZulu Natal.
This is part of the organization’s Programme to translocate 2,000 southern white rhino to secure protected areas in Africa over the next 10 years.
In a statement, African Parks said the Munyawana Conservancy, has 9,085 hectares of land, that was returned to its ancestral owners, the Makhasa and Mnqobokazi communities as part of South Africa’s land restitution process.
Both communities requested that the land continue to be kept under conservation.
Through this legacy, the Munyawana Conservancy, now a 29,866-hectare reserve, is upheld through a collaboration of community and private landowners that include the Makhasa Community Trust, the Mnqobokazi Community Trust, and Beyond Travel, Phinda Private Game Reserve and Zuka Private Game Reserve.
Dale Wepener, Munyawana Warden & Conservation Manager said “we’re grateful for the partnerships with the Munyawana Conservancy, and for this first translocation which was carried out with andBeyond Travel, Zuka Private Game Reserve, and Conservation Solutions, with financial support provided by WeWild Africa.”
