The South African delegation has arrived in Davos, for the 55th World Economic Forum (WEF), from the 20th – 24th January 2025.
A big win for South Africa to be shared with the world, is the progress as a result of energy reforms and market transformation introduced, which has led to 300 days without loadshedding.
Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, said the signing of the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill into law in August 2024, has modernized the sector.
Ramokgopa said the Government intends to increase generation capacity from 48 Gigawatts (GW) to 78 GW by 2035, to invest in energy, natural gas and nuclear power.
Thus far, SA has procured 13,422 Megawatts (MW) of renewable energy since 2020.
This has amounted to about $16 billion.
This year’s theme at WEF, is “Collaboration in the Intelligent Age.”
WEF convenes global leaders to address key global and regional challenges. These include responding to geopolitical shocks, stimulating growth to improve living standards, and stewarding a just and inclusive energy transition.
President Ramaphosa is expected to deliver a special address at the WEF, where he will present the economic priorities of South Africa’s Government of National Unity and advance the country’s G20 Presidency.
