This is mainly to support scientific advancement in sustainable practices.
In addition, the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment (DFFE), said in a statement, the agreement will facilitate an exchange of technology and best practices, to promote modern aquaculture technology and responsible farming methods.
This move is expected to enhance expertise in small-scale and industrial fisheries management, regulatory approaches and enforcement measures.
Narend Singh, the Deputy Minister of DFFE, said
“through this strategic partnership, South Africa and Chile aim to create new opportunities for development and innovation in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, ensuring that marine resources are managed responsibly and sustainably for the benefit of both countries.”
He also said the agreement will enhance efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
