Police are on high alert, as a result of messages doing the rounds on social media, urging “violent protests” against illegal immigrants, on June 16.

The South African Human Rights Community (SAHRC), said it alerted the police of these messages.

The SAHRC also said it would closely monitor the situation, and follow up on any offenders, with the Cybercrimes Act 19 of 2020.

“While the Commission does not dismiss genuine grievances about crime or service delivery, we remind the public that freedom of expression, does not extend to speech that incites hatred or violence.”

Earlier on this month, several videos went viral, of protesters supposedly illegal immigrants, another was of locals, demanding “mass deportation of foreigners.”
