Heavy snowfall on Oliviershoek Pass has led to the closure of the R74 between Harrismith and Bergville.

Motorists were stranded on Friday evening, due to difficult conditions of the roads, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Government (COGTA), said in an alert.

“Our teams are working tirelessly to clear snow and assist stranded drivers.”

The N3 Toll Route (N3TC), also provided extremely dangerous driving conditions, according to COGTA.

“Apart from snowfalls, the sudden drop in temperatures is also causing the formation of black ice.
Road surfaces are slippery, and reports received, are of trucks losing control on the road, especially uphill the Van Reenen Pass.”

N3TC, has therefore, appealed to all road users, on Friday, including trucking operators, to suspend trips to mountain areas between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal until further notice.

KZN COGTA, also said its Disaster Management teams, are actively monitoring conditions across the province as heavy snowfall and rains continue to affect various areas.

Another main road temporarily closed, is the R617, between Kokstad and Underberg.

Close closely monitored, are the N2 Ingeli and the N3 Mooi-River.
