Masisebenze Secondary in Thembisa, is one of the schools on the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (GDARDE)’s Climate Change School Awareness Programme.
The Programme in partnership with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), aims to encourage learners to adopt climate-smart habits and advocate for environmental policies within their communities.
Danisile Sekgethe, Spokesperson of the GDARDE, said the program builds on the success of 2023, where 845 participants planted 290 trees.
“Accredited by the South African Council of Educators (SACE), the workshops offer educators 10 Continuing Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) points, underscoring the program’s educational value.
Interactive sessions are at the heart of the initiative, featuring collaborative discussions, teach-backs, and multimedia presentations designed to inspire students.”
This year, students will also participate in poetry and essay writing activities, meant to allow them to express their understanding of climate change in innovative ways.
