Two people have died in a violent protest in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Residents took to the streets demanding action from the City of Johannesburg regarding housing.
Different reports indicate around 4h55am, on Monday, 19th May 2025, protesters looted two trucks.
As a result, the N12E & N1N Viking/Golden Highway Offramp is closed at the split of the Diepkloof Interchange.
Nhlanhla Lux, a local politician took to social media “the unrest erupted in Diepkloof, where dozens of residents took to the streets, accusing the City of Johannesburg of ignoring their pleas to develop vacant land for housing. What began as a peaceful demonstration, quickly spiraled into chaos, with protesters blocking the Diepkloof Interchange and looting two trucks.”
