Ground crews are hoping to use calmer wind conditions to win against two active fires in the Cape Winelands District.

This follows firefighting efforts against strong winds on Sunday evening.

Active fires are in the McGregor / Genadendal, mountains and the Witzenberg Valley – Visgat and Rocklands.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services, said fire lines were contained in three areas overnight.

The fire in Matroosberg, just above the Swaarmoed Pass (Witzenberg), which was caused by lightning, was fully contained by teams on Sunday evening. 

Mopping up has begun, as well as in Langeberg (Goat’s Window and Melozhori (Stormsvlei). 

The Municipality also said a third fire in Tulbagh – Bike Forge, was contained in the early hours of Monday morning, around 4am.
