Homes and other infrastructure were destroyed by floods in the Natal Midlands.
Three people were also swept away by the floodwaters in New Hanover, part of the uMshwathi Local Municipality.
Nonhlanhla Gabela, uMgungundlovu District Municipality’s Speaker, visited the scene on Monday to inspect the damage and coordinate rescue teams.
The search for more people is underway.
Gabela urged residents to remain indoors where possible and not to attempt to cross floodwaters or low-lying bridges.
