The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), confirmed the withdrawal of committed funds towards South Africa’s (SA) Just Energy Transition by the United States of America (USA).

DIRCO said in a statement, the decision is effective immediately.

The USA has announced the termination of its membership of the International Partners Group (IPG) for JETPs South Africa, Indonesia and Vietnam.

This comes amidst the International Union for Conservation Action (IUCN) landmark legal proceedings at the ICJ, to seek clarify on legal responsibilities of States in the fight against climate change.

IUCN plays an important and distinct role that is of value to the court, as an organisation with 1,400 State and non-State members, and its related Commissions and bodies encompassing some 17,000 experts with expertise on a range of topics related to climate and biodiversity.

SA said it remains committed to the implementation of international agreements, including decisions taken at the historic Paris Climate Change Conference.

South Africa and other international partners will evaluate the implications of the US withdrawal from the JETP.
