The most common labour shortages in Europe, are detailed in the World Economic
Forum’s 2023 report, as building and related trades (excluding electricity), followed by
metal, machinery, and related trade.
The third highest labour shortage are health
professionals, ITC, drivers and mobile operators, food processing woodworking, garment and other crafts.
Cognitive skills are reported to be growing in importance, according to the WEF report,
a reflection of the growing complexity of problems in the workplace. In addition, four
additional top skills predicted to be important for the next 5 years, include technological
literacy, curiosity and lifelong learning.
Top industries requiring cognitive skills between 2023- 2027, include electronics, non-
Governmental and membership organisations, chemical and advanced materials, care
and personal wellbeing, Government and the Public sector, media and oil & gas.
