In case you missed it, Zoo Lake turned 120 in November 2024.
Here are some interesting facts about the Joburg gem.
š³One of the biggest attractions of this park is of course the beautiful lake which was constructed during 1908. The ācoronation musical fountainā was added in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth of Brittian.
š³During Joburgās 70th birthday year, the famous English dancer Marot Fonteyn danced Swan Lake at Zoo Lake with the lake as backdrop.
š³In addition to the original donation, Wernher, Beit and Company later donated further land for a carriage way around the park. This was used for carriage drives or walks and became the streets that we today know as Upper Park and Lower Park Drives. Think about it next time you drive in these streets!
š³Zoo Lake is renowned for its beautiful picnic spots! In 2018, Zoo Lake won the āBest Picnic Spot in Joburgā-category in The Starās Readersā Choice Award. This survey was run annually by The Star newspaper which they invited readers to select their favourite places in Joburg per category.
š³The musical fountains in the middle of the lake and some lapas have recently been re-painted ā look out for the beautiful, bright colours representing South Africaās rich heritage!
