In case you missed it, Zoo Lake turned 120 in November 2024.

Here are some interesting facts about the Joburg gem.
šŸŒ³One of the biggest attractions of this park is of course the beautiful lake which was constructed during 1908. The ā€œcoronation musical fountainā€ was added in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth of Brittian.
šŸŒ³During Joburgā€™s 70th birthday year, the famous English dancer Marot Fonteyn danced Swan Lake at Zoo Lake with the lake as backdrop.
šŸŒ³In addition to the original donation, Wernher, Beit and Company later donated further land for a carriage way around the park. This was used for carriage drives or walks and became the streets that we today know as Upper Park and Lower Park Drives. Think about it next time you drive in these streets!
šŸŒ³Zoo Lake is renowned for its beautiful picnic spots! In 2018, Zoo Lake won the ā€œBest Picnic Spot in Joburgā€-category in The Starā€™s Readersā€™ Choice Award. This survey was run annually by The Star newspaper which they invited readers to select their favourite places in Joburg per category.
šŸŒ³The musical fountains in the middle of the lake and some lapas have recently been re-painted ā€“ look out for the beautiful, bright colours representing South Africaā€™s rich heritage!
