Six-year-old Banele Mpungose, died in KwaMpofu near Eshowe, after a lightning strike on Sunday, 4 January.
Lwandle Pasi, 22, from Darnal in KwaDukuza, and Siyabonga Mavundla from Ohwebede area in Mandeni, drowned in a separate incident on Saturday, 3 January.
In total, about 11 people have died due to severe weather conditions since the beginning of December, in KwaZulu-Natal.
In addition, about 370 homes were destroyed and 933 households affected. Damage caused by recent rains is estimated at R411 million this season only, including to municipal roads, bridges, schools, and water infrastructure.
Mpumalanga
Municipal teams in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality are still assessing the extent of the damage in Silobela’s Wards 15 (Mkhondo) and 22 (Govan Mbeki), after storms destroyed infrastructure on Tuesday, the 7th January 2025.
Roofs were blown off in some houses, while others were destroyed.
The Municipality said its disaster team was dispatched to assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate assistance to affected families.
The Municipality’s Phetla Thapelo, said in an update, relief measures to the community include temporary shelter, emergency supplies, and ongoing support to ensure residents’ safety and well-being.
“We urge all residents to remain vigilant during adverse weather conditions and report any emergencies or Service Delivery issues to the Municipality through the call centre on 080 001 4890 (toll-free) or 017 004 0210 in which standard rates apply for more information alternately contact your respective councillors.”
