Three on-site security guards were injured, and one rushed to the hospital with burnt wounds, following an explosion of the Bree Substation on Tuesday evening.
As a result, parts of the inner City are in the dark.
City Power said on Wednesday morning, the incident was caused by a faulty 11kV incomer No. 2 breaker
Isaac Mangena, City Power’s Spokesperson, said preliminary investigations indicate tampering with the incomer No. 2 cables.
“The team found evidence of a burnt Stanley knife near the affected cables. The fault caused a flash on the breaker, which burnt the cables and produced heavy smoke inside the substation.”
He said now with the smoke cleared, technical teams would begin assessing the full extent of the damage on Feederboard 02 and affected cables.
Affected areas are Bree, Bree West, Bank City, Ferreirasdorp, Newtown, parts of the Joburg CBD and Marshalltown, including Diagonal, Sauer, Harrison, Simmonds, Ntemi Piliso, Rahima Moosa, and surrounding streets.
