About 39 suspects were arrested on Thursday, and another 82 on Good Friday, in Gauteng.
The Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) said a total of 121 motorists were taken into custody for drinking and driving.
In addition, JMPD said it would remain highly-visible across the City of Johannesburg, as part of intensifying Easter Safety Operations.
Two road related fatalities were recorded in Joburg.
JMPD’s Patrick Jaca, said “as we move into the remainder of the long weekend, we urge all road users to exercise extreme caution. Pedestrians are reminded to remain visible and use designated crossing points, while motorists must adhere to speed limits and avoid the use of alcohol before getting behind the wheel.”
Eastern Cape
More than 130 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence since the launch of the Easter Arrive Alive campaign on 31 March 2026.
The Province’s Department of roads said it increased visibility along key routes, including the N6 linking the Eastern Cape to inland provinces such as Gauteng, the N2 and R61 connecting to the Western Cape, as well as the eastern N2 towards KwaZulu-Natal.
Drunk driving operations were also intensified in towns and cities since Friday night, into the early hours of Sunday morning.
Limpopo
Ernest Rachoene, Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, led a Project Monitoring Programme on the D673 Bindzulani-Nkowankowa road outside Tzaneen in the Mopani District, last week.
This aim was to assess progress on the rehabilitated road, since the 9th of March.
Mpumalanga
Law enforcement operations were intensified along the R23 in Standerton.
Thulasizwe Thomo, MEC of Transport in Mpumalanga, joined the team at critical corridors, including the R23, which connects Mpumalanga with KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
“With the Easter holiday period underway, we continue to urge all road users particularly public transport operators to prioritise safety at all times. Increased traffic volumes are expected along major routes such as the R23 over the weekend” said Thomo.
KZN
Through the #NenzaniLaEzweni (what are you doing in the land?) campaign, many motorists were arrested in Port Shepstone for drunk driving, in operations executed in KwaZulu-Natal by Road Traffic Inspectors (RTI).
Siboniso Duma, the MEC for Transport in KZN, instructed that all reckless motorists must be arrested.
As a result, dozens of motorists were also arrested in Margate, for drunken driving.
A Zimbabwean truck driver, who made an illegal U-turn on the N3, caused a major accident near Tugela Plaza at 3am on Thursday morning, when he collided into a bus.
Duma said the driver was arrested, while 25 passengers, who are South Africans, were sent to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital, for medical care.
“We thank God that 29 other passengers were not injured. There were 53 passengers in total” said Duma.
In addition, the RTI Team intercepted and impounded more than 17 trucks with fake documents.
