Police said they are searching for a man, believed to be a poacher, who fled the scene, on Friday evening, at around 23:00, at a farm near Pienaarsrivier policing precinct in the Waterberg District.
Police also said they shot and killed his partner.
The two were located by a drone.
Police approached them but they fled into nearby bushes.
One was carrying a rifle and another a backpack.
The men started firing at the police, who retaliated.
Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General, also said drones also located three fresh white rhino carcasses on the farm.
Two of the rhinos were found dehorned, while one was not dehorned.
“Rhino poaching is a serious organised crime that threatens our wildlife and the safety of our members. This incident shows our Anti-Poaching Units will respond decisively to protect our natural heritage.”
