City Power began the installation of solar power geysers in Ward 76 in Alexandra, on Wednesday.
The solar geyser installation program will prioritize indigent households, including those headed by children, orphans, the disabled and the unemployed.
Speaking about this initiative, Isaac Mangena of City Power, said “all beneficiaries of the solar geyser installation program, must have smart meters installed alongside the solar geysers, as this is a crucial requirement. If that requirement is not met, we will be left with no choice, but to remove that customer from the list of beneficiaries.”
The project is expected to be rolled out in other wards across Alexandra in the next few weeks.
Thus far, about 626 solar high masts were installed and commissioned, across the City of Johannesburg by both City Power and Eskom, during the 2023/2024 financial year.
Mangena also said City Power’s technicians began inspecting solar geysers installed in 2014 across all Service Delivery Centre areas of supply.
The aim was to assess their condition and address the problem of many units malfunctioning.
“Our team will be wearing the yellow TID bibs, and their credentials may be verified by calling the number reflected on their valid ID cards. Customers are strongly urged not to pay anyone for meter replacement, resetting or solar geyser installations during this period” he said.
Water heating contributes up to 70% of the household energy consumption.
