The assessment of damage in eThekwini is underway after this week’s disruptive heavy rains.
Last weekend, authorities in KwaZulu-Natal wanted eThekwini declared a state of disaster, after last week’s rains caused damage ranging in billions.

On Friday the 14th of March, in addition to washing away a 54-year-old woman’s car, 10 more cars were submerged on the M19 West Bound, near Reservoir Hills.

Additional damage is in low-lying bridges, roads, public infrastructure and homes.

There is a widespread power outage in areas including Kloof, Umzinyathi, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Avoca, oThongathi, Tshelimnyama, New Germany, Westville, and KwaDabeka.

Affected roads are the N2, M19, M4, Umngeni Road and several roads in Pinetown. Stapleton Road remains closed until further notice.

Kloof Falls Road and Bridle Road, were reopened, despite some mud and debris.

Heaton Nicholson Drive Bridge is also unstable, and City engineers are conducting an assessment while the road remains closed.

Some clinics on Pinetown are reportedly without water.

Some beaches in the North and South are temporarily closed until further notice.
This is largely due to flooding, which resulted in muddy water and large amounts of debris from rivers spilling into the sea.

Motorists are advised to follow traffic reports and use alternative routes where possible.
