About 136 families in the Thabo Mbeki township, in Lephalale, were affected by floods this week.

Families were evacuated to Shongoane Community Hall, Mokuruanyane Multipurpose Center and Thabo Mbeki Hall on Tuesday this week.

Assessments are underway to determine the extent of the damage to infrastructure in the area.

Dr Phophi Ramathuba, Premier of Limpopo, went to inspect a possible sinkhole caused by heavy rains in the past weeks on the R71 road in Makgobaskloof.

The R71 connects Tzaneen and Magoebaskloof.

Ramathuba, was accompanied by Ernest Rachoene, MEC for the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure in Limpopo.
She assured residents that the Provincial Government will repair roads left damaged by  recent floods.

As a result, the Provincial Executive Committee will have an urgent meeting on Wednesday, 15 January 2024, to assess the extent of damage caused by floods across the province.

The City of Polokwane said roads heavily impacted by heavy rains the R71 between Paledi and Nobody Circle, Mohlala Road (between Unit D and Sebayeng), R81 (Kotishing bridge), D19 (Vaalkop), R521 (from Chroom Street to the Seshego turn off), Landros Mare and Veldspaat Street and Landros Mare (between the hospital and Excelsior Street).

All Northern borders are closed, including the Groblersburg Border Post, connecting South Africa and and Botswana in Liphalale.

The local Witpoort hospital has also had to evacuate patients on Tuesday.

The floods claimed 5 lives in the Waterberg and Vhembe Districts since the start of heavy rains last week.

3 days ago, two bridges collapsed in Galakwena Village near Mokopane, due to floods.
