First, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality alerted residents that water would be restricted, due to an unlawful notice issued by Vaal Central Water (VCW).
On Friday, Lindiwe Mnguni, the Communications Manager of VCW, confirmed water would be restricted, but within the prescribed legal process.
In a statement, she also said Mathjabeng has used water for years, while paying little.
In addition,“the entity rejects the assertion that VCW has delayed arbitration proceedings of litigating in bad faith.”
Advocate Lauretta Williams, Acting Municipal Manager of Matjhabeng, said water restrictions kicked off on Tuesday, the 30th September 2025.
She also said VCW continues to undermine a court ruling, dating as far back as July 2024.
“We remain steadfast in defending our community against this relentless attack, and will continue to pursue all available legal remedies to safeguard the constitutional right to water” she said.
