Authorities in eMfuleni said the root cause of  contaminated water, is illegal dumping into water  infrastructure.

Following reports of contaminated drinking water quality, a team of experts from eMfuleni and Rand Water, made up of technicians, engineers and scientists, concluded dumping and illegal connections, aggravated the situation.
Makhosonke Sangweni, Spokesperson of eMfuleni Municipality, said all these factors are being addressed via by-laws.

He said since the intervention by the teams, there is a significant improvement in the quality of water.

The Municipality also installed a scouring valve and fire hydrant, replaced all valves, the Palm Springs water meter, repaired leaks within 400 mm steel pipeline and disinfected the pipeline after repairs.

Speaking to Earthnews365 this morning, Sangweni said the replacement of infrastructure in Palm Springs and Evaton, was an emergency. He said the Department of Water and Sanitation, through Section 63 of the Water Act, has appointed Rand Water to work on blockages and maintenance. This will ensure regular maintenance and refurbishments of sewer and pipelines for the next 3 years.
