About 30% of South Africa’s freshwater fish species, need urgent management interventions.

11 of the 30% have interventions underway, but to fully protect fish, resources must increase by 9 fold, according to Domitila Raimondo, Programme Manager: South African National Biodiversity Institute.

She was speaking at the Global Species Congress: Reverse the Red,  held this week.

She said South Africa is the only country that has quantified action required for effective conservation of species.
She said about R18, 680, 000 was spent in the conservation of freshwater fish, in the last 5 years.
About R168, 105, 000 is required to recover all fish species in the next 5 years.
