The Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality has advised residents not to eat fish from the Boesmanspruit dam, as it may pose a health risk.

The Municipality has launched an investigation into the death of hundreds of fish that washed out of the dam.

SI Malaza, the Municipality’s Acting Manager said in a statement, preliminary findings of the cause of death, point to environmental factors, contamination and ecological imbalances.

As a result, residents are also advised to avoid fishing, swimming and using the dam, until further notice.

The Municipality also said it is furthering an investigation into water contamination, with specialists and health authorities.

In the interim, Malaza said water extraction is also on hold and households will be supplied from boreholes.
