The City of Cape Town is about to rehabilitate about 28 kilometers of sewer pipelines.

This is to improve Sanitation services for an estimated 275,000 households in Athlone, Hanover Park, Lotus River, Ottery, Grassy Park, Eagle Park, Pelican Park and surrounds.

It will cost the City about R796 million, to rehabilitate sewers built in the 1960s.
Ever since then, residential and business areas have expanded.

The rehab is expected to help restore the structural integrity of the pipes, prevent leaks and groundwater ingress, so that the system can continue conveying sewage from properties to pump stations and wastewater treatment works.

It will also protect the internal surfaces of the concrete pipes from more corrosion, which is naturally caused by hydrogen sulphide gas that is released from oxidised sewage.

The City said it will also rehabilitate existing sewer manholes.
