The death toll has risen to 57 in the Eastern Cape, following floods this week.

The Eastern Cape Office of the Premier, said on Thursday afternoon, about 51 of the deceased are from the OR Tambo District and 6 from Amathole District.

In addition, about 1000 people were displaced by the floods, while 127 schools were destroyed and about 20 health facilities.

Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), 
visited flood-stricken areas, on Thursday, joined by the Siviwe Gwarube, Minister of Basic Education, Zolile Williams, the Eastern Cape MEC for CoGTA, Fundile Gade, MEC for Education. 

Electricity was restored to about 235,000 households, in Matatiele, in the Eastern Cape, on Thursday morning, following a widespread blackout, caused by strong wind and snowfall, which affected 300,000 homes, on Tuesday this week.

Eskom’s Cape Coastal Cluster said its teams would start with backlog of about 65,000 customers in Ngqeleni, Willovale, Mthatha, Libode, Qumbu, Lusikisiki, Sterkspruit, Coffee Bay and surrounding areas.

Eskom also said in a notice on Thursday “we continue to urge the remaining customers to be patient and to continue to treat all appliances as live, during this period.”

The OR Tambo District Municipality asked donations be centralised, through the Head of the Centre.
