Eskom has launched a campaign to encourage residents to protect transformers, ahead of Winter months. Today marks day 51 without loadshedding.

In a statement, Eskom said over 2000 transformers are overburdened due to illegal connections and tampering.

The power utility said about R300 million, was spent in the last year, to replace failed transformers and mini substations.

The “Save Your Transformers, save lives” campaign, aims to encourage residents to reduce consumption to ease up the load on transformers.
“As the load increases, transformers can fail and explode, causing safety risks.”

The other aspect of the campaign discourages illegal connections.

Eskom said it is launching the campaign ahead of Winter this year.

Speaking to Earthnews365, back in February 2024, Sihle Ndlovu, resident of Orlando East, said more needs to be done to connect informal settlements and backyard occupants to mini substations and transformers. Then she said this would curb illegal connections.
