The eThekwini Municipality and Durban Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) are working at easing congestion at the Durban Port.

Cyril Xaba, Mayor of eThekwini, visited the Durban Container Terminal on Friday, 29 August.

Musa Mbhele, City Mayor and senior municipal leadership, met with the Port’s management, to kickstart discussions, subsequent to a memorandum of understanding signed, earlier.

Xaba said “as a municipality, we are committed to creating an enabling environment for the Durban Port, to serve as a gateway to the African continent and unlock the vast economic potential of our region.”

He also said there are several infrastructure projects planned to  ease congestion and improve logistics systems, such as the development of a dry port in Cato Ridge, major upgrades to rail infrastructure to shift cargo transport from road to rail, and the establishment of truck staging areas.

The construction of a second access road to the port, is already underway.

The city said in a statement, it is also planning to construct a second airport in Durban’s southern region, to further enhance the movement of goods and passengers.

Earle Peters,Durban Port Terminals Managing Executive, said the terminal’s goal is to become the preferred port terminal in South Africa, acknowledging the city’s vital support in achieving this vision.

Peters said there was a recent investment in cargo handling equipment, which reduced truck turnaround time, to 95 minutes.
