A heatwave is sweeping through parts of the Cape.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) recorded temperatures of about 44°C in Vredendal, 42°C in Worcester, 41°C in Riversdale and 40°C in Cape Town and Oudtshoorn.

The SAWS urged residents to stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable people such as the elderly and children.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Nama Khoi local municipality in the Northern Cape, as well

as in places over the West Coast and Cape Winelands district municipalities in the Western Cape.

Similar conditions also persist in the Eastern Cape until Friday.
