The Council for Scientific Research  and Industrial Council (CSIR) launched the High-Efficiency, Low-Emission (HELE) project.

The project is in partnership with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and Eskom.

The aim is to collectively reduce emissions,  develop skills, and create energy security.

Phase 1 is well underway, which includes engineering, plant design, site selection, and environmental/regulatory work.

The programme also plans to include a feasibility study for piloting existing Eskom power plants with HELE CFB technology. Then in the long term, build national capability for advanced coal technology.

This is seen as a faster deployment with lower costs than new construction.

Coaltech Research Association is also part of the project.

In a joint statement by all four partners, last week, said “the Project Leadership Committee, calls for credible local analysis of technologies that can improve the efficiency of coal-based generation, reduce emissions and support system stability during the transition period.“
