City Power successfully decommissioned  a collapsing high mast light in Nomzamo Park.

Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said a high mast light was on the verge of collapsing in Nomzamo Park.

He said the project of disassembling the high mast light was prompted by an inspection  conducted, following reports of the deteriorating state of the structure.

“The infrastructure was badly damaged due to vandalism. After it stopped functioning, residents
started using the base of that structure as a chamber to set fires” he said.

This worsened the state of the high mast light and compromised its structural integrity.

Mangena said, in that condition, it could have fallen at any time and potentially harmed many people in the area.

“City Power swiftly actioned a process to extract the infrastructure. The process included consultations with the residents of Nomzamo Park to request the removal of twenty one shacks which were in close proximity of the high mast light.”

City Power has urged other areas, who reside close to such lights, to report any act of vandalism.

“We also encourage the public to refrain from erecting housing structures near the Apollo light because it makes it difficult for technicians to perform routine checks and maintainance” said Mangena.
