Japan first announced its intention to release wastewater from the Fukushima to the sea, back in April 2021.

The wastewater being discharged, was used to cool the nuclear plant’s fuel rods, after the 2011 incident, and is now stored in large tanks.

The Fukushima is a nuclear plant that was severely damaged in 2011, when an earthquake measured at 9.0, left an estimated 20,000 people dead in the Northeast of Japan.

Although the initial amount was first released in August this year, it is estimated to take another 30 to 40 years or so, to complete the exercise.

Although the Government of Japan maintains there is no harm to sea and human life, environmental groups are up in arms, claiming distrust to how water will be treated to be totally free of radioactive substances.  A statement from the United Nations cautioned Japan’s action would cause “irreversible damage.”

Fishing communities in the Region are also up in arms, claiming this action will cast a dent on seafood from that part of the world.
