Joburgers are relieved to have confirmation from the Property Company (JPC), that the Botanical Gardens are in fact, not on sale.

A video from the JPC was posted, following allegations that the company plans to sell various assets, among them the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and the Emmarentia Dam.

Sizeka Tshabalala, General Manager at the Property Company (JPC), has refuted claims that Marks Park and the Killarney Country Club, are up for sale, in favour of the construction of low cost housing.

“What is also concerning is that the community thinks that we want to sell the West Park Cemetery, the Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam. There is no truth in all these allegations.”

Tshabalala said the City is merely revisiting 30-year lease agreements.

In such agreements, the Killarney Country Club, she said, pays the City R2 per year, and Marks Park only R49 a year.

In addition the City also subsidises these establishments.

As a result, she has requested permission from Council to start a public participation process, triggering Section 34 of the Asset Transfer Regulation.

She also said engagements are underway with both provincial and national treasury, to advise on possibilities of further development of all areas under Tshabalala’s management-Wanderers Stadium, the Ruimsig Arena, Diepkloof Plaza Soweto and Pirates in Greenside.
