The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) set the record straight, following accusations that the restoration of the Lilian Ngoyi Road (Bree Street), cost millions and was way over the set project allocated time.

Zweli Nyathi, CEO of the JRA, said “we want to assure the public and our partners, that this project remains on budget. The total cost incurred so far, for Phase 1, excluding the R4,5m settlement, amounts to R101 million. We have been able to keep costs down, while ensuring quality work.”

Nyathi also said the second phase of the project, cost R110 million.

JRA also admitted to paying the first contractor R19 million of the R180 million, allocated initially for both phases of the reconstruction project.

A settlement amount of R4,5 million, was paid for legal fees.

The second contractor was paid R82 million of the R182 million quoted, for both phases.
