The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has pledged R10 million to communities affected by floods of the 10th of June 2025, in the Eatern Cape- Mthatha under the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local
Municipality in OR Tambo District, as well as Mnquma, Mbhashe, Great Kei, and Amahlathi
municipalities in the Amathole District.
Professor Barney Pityana, Chairperson of the Board, visited the area over the weekend, with Jodi Scholtz- the Commissioner.
Pityana said “the NLC is activating its Research-Based Funding Model, as outlined in Section 2A (3) of
the Lotteries Act (as amended). This model enables the Commission to fund worthy good causes
without a formal application process, particularly in response to emergencies, crises, and disasters that
adversely affect communities. Emergency interventions are conducted following a rapid needs
assessment and are implemented in partnership with qualified not-for-profit organisations appointed to
our national panel of strategic partners.”
The Fund has tasked the Small Projects Foundation (SPF) to implement a high-impact intervention.
Jodi Scholtz, NLC Commissioner, said “our interventions include the distribution of food parcels, clean water, clothing, school uniforms and supplies, sanitary pads and essential healthcare support. The relief will reach thousands of displaced and vulnerable households through a coordinated and accountable process supported by trained field teams across nine municipalities.”
