Mop-up operations and humanitarian aid, continue in parts of areas affected by floods this weekend.
Anton Bredell, Minister of the Western Cape Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, said on Sunday afternoon, although weather conditions are beginning to stabilise, the Region’s Provincial Disaster Management Centre, remains on high alert and will continue to monitor all developments.
He also said full dams are also under enhanced monitoring, including Theewaterskloof, Voëlvlei, Clanwilliam and the Berg River dams.
A few roads remain closed in the Cape Winelands, West Coast, and Overberg districts due to flooding and high runoff volumes.
Humanitarian relief efforts to displaced residents of Philippi, Wallacedene, Khayelitsha, and Lwandle, continue, by various organisations including the Red Cross, Community Chest, Mustadafin, Gift of the Givers, and RESPOND Coalition.
Animal rescue and aftercare also continues, Lwazi Ntungele, SPCA Inspector at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, said “we found dogs curled up in the cold, shivering on scraps of plastic or on soaked disintegrating sponge.”
He also said “you can feel them sigh. They stop shaking. And for the first time, they just rest. That’s what a warm blanket can do.”
