A 2 Megalitre (Ml) water tower and pump station is under construction in Midrand.
Johannesburg Water (JW) said once completed, this upgraded facility, will supply water to Carlswald, Blue Hills, Kyalami, and Barbeque Downs.
In its current state, the Erand Reservoir consists of a 25 Megalitre (ML) capacity reservoir, a 9ML capacity reservoir, as well as a pump station.
The existing pump station sources water from the 9ML reservoir and delivers it to a 0.5ML capacity water tower elevated to 30 meter above ground level, to produce the required hydrostatic pressure for the distribution of potable water to local communities.
JW said it has invested about R92 million into the project, aimed at boosting water supply into the Midrand area.
The project is currently about 60% complete.
Pfunzo Mudzanani, Johannesburg Water’s Project Manager, said “the Master Plan is to increase water storage capacity of the existing system, specifically for higher lying areas, and to unlock the Midrand area for further development.”
He also said the storage capacity is necessary, to mitigate against service disruption, should network bursts occur or should there be a supply disruption from the bulk supplier, as well as maintaining adequate supply pressure in the reticulation system.
