Measles cases have increased by 81 cases across the country.

A situation report by the  National Institute for Communicable Diseases of South Africa (NICD) confirmed, in the week ending, the 19 September 2025, a total of 1,100 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported.

Gauteng has the most cases, now at 610, with the City of Tshwane leading the pack with (310), followed by Joburg (144), Ekurhuleni (132), Sedibeng (21), and the West Rand (3). 

The Free State province, had 140 cases reported,  75.7% are of children aged between 1-14 years.

In Limpopo, 155 cases were reported in children aged between 1-14 years. A chunk of the cases are in the Vhembe District Municipality.

Mpumalanga province, has 82 cases, while the Western Cape, has 38.

The report has recommended an escalation of  awareness, to alert communities about the outbreak and ways of preventing the disease. 

It has also encouraged parents to vaccinate their children to protect them against possible infections.

In addition, Provinces are urged to conduct measles risk assessment and continue with targeted or supplementary measles immunisation activities or campaigns in areas with low measles coverage.
