The North West Umbrella Fire Protection Association has warned against the potential of Firenadoes (fire tornadoes) due to extreme weather conditions underway in the province.

Firenadoes are extreme fire phenomenon that occur when intense heat and strong wind conditions interact.
They propel the spread of wildfires, posing serious threat to life, property and firefighting efforts.

Thabo Stoch, Chairman of the Fire Association, has urged residents and visitors to the North West, to minimize fire risks by avoiding activities that could ignite a fire, such as burning waste, using open flames or using equipment that may spark.

He also said people should monitor alerts and report fires immediately.

“We are experiencing an unusual and complex weather pattern, characterized by extreme temperatures combined with intermittent rainfall. While it may seem counterintuitive, these conditions are creating a unique and hazardous environment” said Stoch.
