A black moon is a rare astronomical event that occurs when there are two new moons in the same month.
A new moon is the phase of the moon when it is not visible from the Earth, because it is aligned with the sun and the Earth, according to the African Astronomical Society.
Dr Angelo Hoorn of the Severe Weather and Information Center, said today’s Black Moon is characterized by high tides, lower than normal low tides, rip currents and freak waves.
It is advisable to be cautious at sea in the next 5 – 7 days.
In a lunar calendar, there is one full moon and one new moon each month.
A second full moon in a single calendar month is sometimes called a “Blue Moon.”
The Earth’s seasons are approximately three months long and have three new moons.
When a season has four new moons the third new moon is called a Black Moon.
These Black Moons are seasonal and occur at least once in 33 months according to Time and Date.
