Some residents of the Eastern Cape woke up this morning to localised floods.
Areas mostly under water are Uitenhage (Kariega, Dr Brown/Braun, Madina Road, KwaLanga, Ou Lapland, Algoa Bay) and parts of Jeffreys Bay.
Anthony Saaiman, from Kariega in Uitenhage, asked for temporary shelter for the community of the flooded Dr Brown/Braun area. His plea is to accommodate children first.
Sithembiso Soyaya, of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said this morning, there are large parts of Kariega, that are flooded but there are streets that have lower water levels and traffic is using those routes.
He said Algoa Road from Despatch is closed by Metro police because it is heavily flooded.
Mororists are directed to other safer routes.
“At Cuyler from the bridge up to Caledon, the road is full of debris, fleet B0675 is blocking the road from the bridge side. We are currently checking all the streets at the CBD.”
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) latest satellite image indicated a Cut-Off Low Pressure System (COL), spinning clockwise just west of Cape Town.
This system (in combination with a surface trough and ridging high pressure system) is expected to bring heavy rain to parts of the south- eastern parts of the EC and even to the extreme southeastern parts of KZN. It is expected to bring further adverse weather conditions to large parts of SA over the next few days.
Yesterday, SAWS issued a Yellow Level 6 Warning For Disruptive Rain, which could result in the flooding of settlements, roads and bridges in the coastal area and adjacent interior of the Eastern Cape.
SAWS also issued a Yellow Level 2 Warning For Damaging Wind And Waves, resulting in localised disruptions to harbours, difficult driving conditions along coastal roads and choppy seas, as well as possible coastal infrastructure damage between Cape Point and Coffee Bay.
There is a Warning for severe thunderstorms
over the North West, eastern parts of Northern Cape, Free State, Gauteng as well as in the Northern interior of the Eastern Cape. This could result in strong, damaging winds and hails in these Provinces.
