A fire at Central Substation, in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to a widespread power outage in Marshalltown, Selby, Standard Bank, Carlton Centre, parts of the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) and Fire Services are on site, managing the incident.
City Power said its technicians do not have access to the substation as yet, to start conducting assessments of the incident.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said “the entire substation has been taken offline. This remains necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and to prevent further damage to infrastructure.”
The cause of the fire is unknown but a formal investigation is expected to begin.
