A joint statement by the eThekwini Municipality, and its partners, Talbot The art of Water, in partnership with Adopt a River, has urged residents to follow the latest reports on results of water samples.
There are positive strides reported in managing the sewage plants and inflow of Ecoli, to the sea. But the Municipality and its partners said they cannot make blanket statements about the safety of the water.
This is because it is influenced by various factors, including “rainfall patterns, currents, tides, loadshedding schedules and proximity of beaches to river mouth and outfalls.”
They also reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and accountability.
“We look forward to continued split sampling and the transparent release of weekly water quality results. However, it is crucial for us to clarify our stance on the safety of beaches, especially during the upcoming festive season.”
In a recent statement today, the City of eThekwini said the City’s beaches are open and safe for swimming.
“The quality of water at all beaches is constantly monitored to ensure the safety of the public. Only beaches with acceptable water quality standards are open.”
The City also said it conducts weekly water sampling with independent laboratories to guarantee public safety and to ensure the quality of water at its beaches.
Beaches that have poor water quality are closed.
