One of the reasons why Karpowership is using Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) instead of offshore wind energy for example, is because renewable energy is weather dependent.

Well, this is according to Zeynep Harezi, Chief Operating Officer of Karpowership, who maintains LNG is half the price of what Eskom is paying for diesel. She was speaking to a media house, via an online interview, yesterday.

She also said ” when there is no wind, wind energy is affected, and when there is no sun, solar power is affected.”

Kershni Ramreddi, of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, says “the transition from coal and fossil fuels to renewable energy is one that is of utmost importance. It is urgent and deeply required for South Africa, in order to have clean and safe lifestyles as well as a growing economy.”

She also says while limitations provided by renewable energy are real, there are strategies and technologies that can be implemented to help mitigate them.

Solutions include energy storage solutions, which allow any excess energy to be stored and used when required.

Combining different renewable energy sources could help compensate for each other’s limitations.
Grid integrating which allows renewable energy to coincide with the electricity grid, could boost supply.

Ramreddi also says the creation of more incentives such as feed-in tariffs, tax credits and investment in renewable energy projects could go a long way.

But frank and informative discourse must continue, through the creation of public awareness and educating the public on the benefits and limitations of renewable energy.
