Eskom has launched a battery energy storage system, in Worcester, yesterday.

The pilot, in the Western Cape, has a storage capacity of 1440 Megawatts per hour, per day.
Upon completion of the first phase, Eskom will implement an additional storage capacity of 616 MW/h, at 4 of its distribution and transmission sites.
The solar PV capacity will be around 58 MW.

About 100 Megawatt per hour of energy, is ideally meant to support small towns for about 5 hours.

Speaking on site, Monde Bala, Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution, said “we are grateful to the various funders of the project. This is proof of what we can achieve when we work together as a team, and in collaboration with industry and local communities.”
