The United States of America has given a thumbs up for South Africa to export fish to that country.

This follows a rigorous review process, which witnessed the DAFF work closely with various stakeholders, to submit information required.

About 135 countries were subject to the review, and an estimated 2,500 fisheries.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DAFF) said the review, means the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, recognises South Africa’s initiative to protect marine mammals.

Dr Dion George, Minister of DAFF, said “this determination will allow us to continue to export fish and fish products, to the US, beyond January 2026, securing critical market access and reaffirming South Africa’s role as a responsible fishing nation.”

Dr George also said SA continues to work at strengthening its regulatory programme, beyond the comparability requirements, to also uphold the highest environmental sustainability standards.
