Tiny, wide-eyed seal pups are starting to appear on our beaches… but here’s something you may not know: These little ones cannot swim for the first 4 months of their lives. If you chase them back into the ocean, they will almost certainly drown.
These pups need their moms, rest, and sometimes rescue — not panic, selfies, or interference.
Together, we can make the beach a safe place for them.
✨ DO’s when you come across a seal pup:
✔️ Keep a safe distance – admire quietly from afar.
✔️ Call Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre immediately for advice and assistance.
✔️ Keep dogs leashed and children away.
✔️ Allow the pup space to breathe and rest.
🚫 DON’T’s (they can cost a life):
❌ Don’t chase the pup back into the ocean – it cannot swim yet.
❌ Don’t try to pick it up, touch, or feed it.
❌ Don’t gather a crowd or cause stress.
💙 Every pup is a precious life. By giving them space, you are giving them a chance. Please share this message far and wide – your awareness can save lives this season.
