Five miners have been trapped underground Ekapa Mine in Kimberley, for close to 80 hours now.

Concerns from various organisations are growing louder, including the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), who said the five are nearly 890 metres underground following a mud rush.

Moreover, the workers cannot be reached by communication and other unionists, such as the National Union of Mineworkers (NUMSA) in Kimberley, insist the local management of Ekapa Mine must take responsibility for the incident.

The incident has raised old skeletons related to the mining sector, dating back ten years ago, where three miners never surfaced from underground Lilly Mine in Mpumalanga.

Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Petroleum(DMRE) rushed to the scene on Friday.
