Gauteng was the preferred destination for day travellers in 2021 and 2022.
Findings released by StatsSA indicate Gauteng’s day visitors grew by 18,8% in 2021 and by about 20,3% in 2022.
The Western Cape attracted the second highest day visitors in 2022, resulting in a growth of 16,1%, followed by Limpopo with 14,3%.
Overnight visitors back in 2021, went to Limpopo (20,3%), Gauteng (15,1%) and KwaZulu-Natal (14,9%).
In 2022, visitors preferred the Western Cape (15,8%), followed by Limpopo at 14,9% and KwaZulu-Natal (14,7%).
According to findings detailed in StatsSA’s Domestic Tourism Survey (DTS) 2022, the total expenditure on domestic trips incurred in 2021 was approximately R36,4 billion.
This constitutes day trip spending of about R23,8 billion, while spending on overnight trips amounted to R12,6 billion.
This figure increased to approximately R41,2 billion in 2022, accounting for day trips of about R25,3 billion and overnight trips of about R15,9 billion.
