Talhado, the Southern Elephant Seal, was sighted at Jeffreys Bay.

NSRI Station 37 recognised the seal, who always spent three weeks molting at the Talhado slipway in Port Elizabeth Harbour during January and early February.

That is how he got his name.

The NSRI warned residents and visitors to follow safety protocols to ensure both public safety and the animal’s welfare.

“It is important for the public to understand that while he may appear sluggish, he is a wild animal undergoing a natural physiological process” said the NSRI.

The public is urged to maintain at least 10 meters away from the seal at all times, to keep dogs on a leash and well away from the area.

“Do not attempt to feed him, pour water on him, or encourage him back into the surf. He is ashore because he needs to rest.

Please keep noise levels down and do not crowd the animal.”

If you spot Talhado on any beaches, report his location immediately to the Bayworld Stranding Hotline or contact NSRI Station 37 at 079 916 0390.
